How NHD Korea grew.

NHD Korea at Seoul International School

Seoul International School became the host of NHD Korea in 2021, when Steve Nave and James Kowalski took over as affiliate coordinators. The first event in the post-COVID world was held virtually and hosted 310 students.

Since then, the popularity of NHD Korea has grown rapidly, with more than 800 students participating in 2026.

National History Day since 1974

National History Day began in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1974. Founder David Van Tassel, a professor at Case Western Reserve University, wanted students to analyze historical events, explain their significance, and understand historical perspective through a shared annual theme.

The program expanded quickly. Representatives from 19 states attended the first National Contest in 1980, and NHD now reaches more than 600,000 secondary students worldwide through local and affiliate programs.
