Junior Division covers grades 6–8 and Senior Division covers grades 9–12. Paper is individual only; Documentary, Exhibit, Performance, and Website allow individual or groups of two to five students.

Read the rule book before you build
NHD states that the current Contest Rule Book took effect on June 22, 2020. It applies from Regional through National contest levels. Local logistics and deadlines are set by the relevant contest coordinator.

Common project elements
Every NHD entry requires a process paper and an annotated bibliography. Projects must show historical context, multiple perspectives, accurate research, historical significance, a clear argument, student voice, and academic integrity.
Build an original historical argument
Connect the topic to the annual theme, establish historical context, use primary and secondary sources, consider multiple perspectives, and explain historical significance.
Submit the process paper and bibliography
Every entry must include the required written materials. Follow the common rules as well as the specific construction, time, word-count, and media rules for the selected category.
Keep the work in the students’ voice
Students are responsible for their research, analysis, interpretation, and production. Judges evaluate historical quality and clarity of presentation, then reach decisions through consensus.
