Discuss. Reach consensus. Give useful feedback.

01

Review the entry

Judges consider the historical work and the category-specific presentation using the official evaluation form.

02

Work as a team

NHD judges generally work in teams of three.

03

Discuss and rank

NHD uses consensus judging. Judges discuss the entries and rank them together rather than simply adding numerical scores.

04

Provide feedback

Students use judge feedback to revise projects between contest levels. They may refine research, analysis, title, and presentation, but they may not change the topic.

How the 2026 affiliate organized judging

The Korea guide describes judges working in teams, first evaluating independently and then discussing entries together to reach a consensus ranking.

2–3 judgesA judge worked with one or two teammates.
5–10 projectsA judging team was assigned approximately this many entries.
2 roundsPreliminaries and finals; first- and second-ranked preliminary entries advanced to finals.

Feedback is part of the job

The Korea guide emphasizes detailed, substantive comments that explain both strengths and areas for improvement. Feedback should help students understand how their historical work and presentation can improve.
